Thanks for visiting my website.  I hope you find what you are looking for here.  Please consider the environment before printing out any of these pages.

Poetry

I was startled to get a letter from Bloodaxe, a leading UK based poetry imprint,  saying they want to publish three of my poems in a new anthology for national distribution.    I was even more surprised that one of the poems dates back to 1996 - have I really been writing poetry for 15 years?

I celebrated by reading three poems in public for the first time in, well, years. Two of them were from a set of my most obscure poems.  I got away with it...

I wrote a poem for Manchester Literature Festival / All FM Radio.  You can listen to it as a podcast here (as well as a bit of an interview with me and four other poems):

Reading

Still not read much from the e-reader. It's preloaded with 100 classics, but instead I have been reading:

The 13th tale  by Helen Setterfield.    A marvellous mingling of flavours.

Too Asian, Not Asian Enough, edited by  Kavita Bhanot.  An excelent introducion to the UK Asian voices of the future.

British Muslim Fictions edited by Claire Chambers.  Great introduction to a range of writers, all interviewed by Claire Chambers.  Makes you want to read them to see how what they say is  reflected in what they write.

Kill All Enemies by Melvin Burgess.  It's my 'train' read.  unusually 'true to life' characters.

My Utitlity bill: fascinating the maths that goes into the huge bill I have!

Blog

So the blog is up and running.   The link to it is here http://blog.peterkalu.co.uk/     So far the blog has covered musings on subjects as diverse as car parks and fashion shows (as well as becoming a 'wall' for some storytelling works in progress). It gets updated sporadically.  You can comment on the blog (it is a Wordpress platform) though you have to leave an email address (to stop spammers).

Drama

Did a session recently with 23 prisoners.  They asked me to return but with a play that can give roles for all 23!  Only rarely does a playwright ever get asked to write for so many people.  It should be a fun challenge.

Storytelling

I have had some really interesting times with new stroytellers from around the world (or who are going around the world!).  Go to the 'contact' page for enquiries about my availability as a storyteller.   Youtube has one or two videos of stories I worked on with a small team, relating to the subject of Manchester's involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.  The main site for the subject is  www.revealinghistories.org.uk

There is a small write-up on me in the on-line magazine, 'Yush'.  Check it out at this link:
