Latest news . .....January 2013

Thanks for visiting my website. I hope you find what you are looking for here. Please consider the environment before printing out any of these pages.

Where Am I?

I'm back from Beirut, Lebanon.  What a beautiful city!  I told stories at the Metro Theatre there as well as at a host of other places.  It was great meeting and working with Beirut based writers, especially Abid and Joann, and meeting up again with the author, Tariq Mehmood. Thanks to all at AUB and BC for their sponsorship and support!

Poetry

You can find three of my poems in the new Bloodaxe anthology, 'Out of Bounds'. The launch at Waterstones, Manchester in October was fun. I  read with a bunch of top notch poets, Nabila Jameel, Shamshad Khan, John Siddique, Maya Chowdhry, and Segun Lee French. More information on this launch is here:

http://www.manchesterliteraturefestival.co.uk/events/20th-october/out-of-bounds

You can see me reading one of the poems ('Manchester') on a windswept rainy day at Manchester Book Market here:

I wrote a poem for Manchester Literature Festival / All FM Radio. You can listen to it as a podcast here (as well as a bit of an interview with me and four other poems):

Fiction

I have been busy scribbling away and have managed to write a new novel as well as some short fiction. I am hopeful these stories will all see the light of day once they find literary homes among the industry's agents, publishers and editors. More news on those when they are more widely available. For now, I'd just say I had great fun writing them, and a big thanks to the writer friends of mine who have helped me with them!

Reading

I have been reading:

The Madman of Freedom Square by Hassan Blasim, The Dam by David Constantine, The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna. I've also been reading a French joke book. Nothing more difficult to 'get' than a joke told in a language that is not your first language. It's a great way of brushing up second language skills though.

Blog

I intend to get back to posting stuff up on the blog, perhaps short poems/texts etc accompanied by a photo or two. The link to it is here http://blog.peterkalu.co.uk/ So far the blog has covered musings on subjects as diverse as car parks and fashion shows (as well as becoming a 'wall' for a story -The Both Baby- me and my daughter have been doing together). The blog gets updated sporadically. You can comment on the blog (it is a Wordpress platform) though you have to leave an email address (to stop spammers).

Drama

'The Bay', got an outing at the three minute theatre recently. That great actor, Ali Gadema also incorporated an IPad into the performance, a very clever way of being able to revisit the script. Thanks to poet, Jackie Hagan for stepping in to play a very disorientating part at short notice.
